Chinese philosopher Lau Tzu said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." That applies to anyone thinking of going to law school and to this new venture for me.

I am in my 14th year as a law school professor after practicing law for 13 years. Through the past 14 years, I have been blessed to share in the law school journeys of many students. Whether it has been providing input on course planning, discussing job and career options, or helping students develop a plan to prepare for final exams, I have tried to support students by providing information, input, and (hopefully) wisdom about the path to and through law school.

On occasion, students have referred to me as their "law school dad." Although it took me some time to accept that I am old enough to be the father of a law school student, that is an undeniable truth, and I have come to embrace it. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with students who do not have lawyers in their families and may not be as familiar with the law school experience.

What I hope to do with this forum is share some "fatherly" advice regarding law school by posting periodic tips and suggestions for prospective and current law school students to consider. These will be general ideas and may not apply to any individual student. I also will do the best I can to respond to questions that prospective and current law school students may have.

This is meant to be a constructive and positive experience for all, so please refrain from any disrespectful or harmful communications, which will only take away from the goal of supporting and motivating students.

Tying things back to where this started, regardless of how insurmountable any challenge may seem, instead of focusing on how hard it may be to succeed, focus on taking the first step in the direction of your goal. That is what I am doing with this website and on social media, and it is what I want you to do with your law school journey. Please also check us out on Instagram at YourLawSchoolDad.
